The Secret to Maca Root
Maca Root, also known as the “Indian Ginseng", is an adaptogenic root similar to ginseng, but not a true ginseng.
Through its adaptogenic properties, it supports general rebalancing of the body & hormones, increases stamina & energy, and aids longevity. Typical servings include 1 tsp of raw or gelatinized maca (explained later). It is consumed best in a blended beverage, with coffee, or as a unique flavor in baked goods (like Botanibites Maca Marble Uplift creation).
Benefits of maca:
Nutrient rich super food
Nourishes the adrenals
Supports the liver
In my conversations, most people are discouraged from taking it because of the bitter, tangy, unpleasant flavor profile. I will say it is definitely an acquired taste, but there is a secret to consuming this root that most do not know about - and it makes the experience completely different!
I first tried raw maca root powder when I worked at Whole Foods a few years ago. I started by adding some to my smoothies in the morning when I was on yet another health kick to treat my recurring migraines. I tried it a couple times and could not stomach how the raw maca tasted. It was extremely bitter and overpowering and ruined quite a few smoothies…
I spoke with a rep from the Navitas company one day who explained the difference between the two types they have available for sale, being raw or gelatinized.
The secret to taking maca root is that gelatinized is the way to go!
Turns out "gelatinized" simply means the maca root is cooked before made into a powder. This not only changes the flavor profile into something much more appetizing, but also increases its absorption in your body. The taste is similar to a malty, nutty, peanut buttery, salty, bitter flavor (if that makes sense) and with the chocolate it is a match made in heaven! If you have already tried the Maca Marble Uplift, then you already know ;)
The Maca Marble Uplift Botanibites functional muffin was inspired by my experience with maca for balancing my hormones to treat my headaches and migraines. Maca also delivers an instant mood enhancing effect and immediate energy increase without the caffeine. It's a great way to start your day or have as midday snack without any crash and full of nourishment.
In the Maca Marble Uplift flavor, I pair the maca powder with coconut sugar, a little extra sea salt, and a dark chocolate swirl made of just cacao, coconut oil, vanilla extract, and coconut sugar. The result was a completely unique flavor combination that has now become the favorite flavor, to my surprise! It is also the lowest in carbs and sugar of the Botanibites mini muffins. The herbal formulation combines maca, cacao and damiana to help balance, regulate, energize and recharge you in a tasty, easy to consume way. Each pack of 3 mini muffins has 1 tsp of gelatinized maca to make sure you get your daily dose!
So next time you want to give maca another chance, please do, but choose gelatinized instead of raw.
